Think back to your childhood, do you remember what you wanted to be when you grew up? You might have wanted to be a doctor, teacher, veterinarian, or professional athlete. But most likely, it was not a software engineer. As time goes on, you might have found hobbies that sparked your passion. For one of our team members, Steven, it was the thrill of playing video games and his interest in technology. Combining these two passions led Steven to pursue a career in software development.
Steven Alford, a Software Engineer II, has been with Core10 for two and half years. Steven not only brings technical experience to the team but also an interesting background in audio production. We think this is Steven’s secret weapon—making him an excellent developer and a personable and effective communicator with our clients.

How did you hear about Core10?
My professor (Dr. Guerin) at UTM.
Why did you choose to work at Core10?
I liked the idea of being able to work on different projects with different tech stacks, allowing me to learn a variety of different languages and technologies.
What did you do before joining the team?
I achieved 2 Bachelor’s degrees, one in Audio Production, and one in Computer Science.
Where did you go to school?
The Art Institute of Nashville and the University of Tennessee - Martin
What did you study?
Audio Production at AI, and Computer Science at UTM
What got you interested in a career in software development?
I have always been tech-savvy, playing a lot of video games and being generally interested in software development. Pursuing a degree in Computer Science helped me to expand upon those hobbies to turn them into a fulfilling career.
What is your favorite project you have worked on at Core10?
NavMD. It was a lot different than most of the projects that I’ve worked on, being in the medical side of things, and it helped me to learn a lot about the languages and frameworks I use most often nowadays.
Tell us about your life outside of Core10…
I have 2 brothers and a sister. I, unfortunately, can’t have pets at my apartment, but one day I hope to have a big yard so that I can have a golden retriever. Most of my hobbies revolve around computers: playing video games, making video games, and occasionally reading (mostly books about video games). I also make music and draw, although those occasions are few and far between.
What is something other people find most surprising to learn about you?
That I have 2 degrees, completely unrelated to one another! I’ve always thought of myself as a creative individual, and I believe that both of my degrees help me every day in the work that I put in.
What is your favorite thing about Martin?
The small-town vibe! I like the slow pace of everything. Having lived in Nashville during my first degree, the hustle and bustle of the city life just weren’t for me.
Why did you choose to stay there?
It’s close to home, and everything is familiar. Also, Martin is a short drive away from most of the places I would want or need to go (Dyersburg, Jackson, Nashville).

Core10 has been an amazing opportunity for me, and I am glad to be a part of such a great organization with talented folks who help me to continue improving!
