From the very inception of Core10 three years ago, Deb Stinson has been a vital member of the team. Though her official title is Engineer III, she is known as a jack-of-all-trades serving as a project lead, scrum master, QA wizard and office plant guru at any given time. Deb works out of our Huntington, West Virginia Hereshore® Development Center. Deb came to Core10 as a graduate from Marshall University with a Bachelor’s in Computer Information Technology and a Master’s in Health Informatics, but also holds an undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University.
What got you interested in a career in software development?
I have always had a strong interest in computers. Through the years I realized I had an intuitive understanding and enjoyment of application UI/UX and coding. Thankfully I had an early experience with WYSIWYG web design, and combined with a love of learning fueled by a constantly growing, ever-changing, tech environment, I was hooked!
What is your favorite project you have worked on at Core10?
Currently, I am working on a project for one of the core banking providers. I love the daily challenges, the interaction with a vast group of Architects, Developers, BAs, and QA Techs, and the opportunity to develop code in a massive, quickly changing application and code-base! There is always something more to learn, develop, and improve on. I also really enjoy being able to share what I have learned with others coming on the project as it expands.
What does life look life outside of Core10?
I live with my husband, two dogs, and my four teenage children and I stay quite busy driving them everywhere and enjoying their involvement in band, choir, and sports. I also enjoy visiting with and calling my eight siblings who are scattered all around the US from up in New Hampshire, across to Oregon, and down to Texas. I play the organ, teach the 3-4 year old kids on Sundays, and facilitate activities for the 8-11year old girls on Wednesdays at Church. Additionally, I teach a few piano lessons out of my house throughout the week.
Some might not know that when I was in school (the second time) and money was tight, my husband and I (and whatever kids we could convince to help) would process deer out of our house during hunting season for ourselves, and our friends and family: meat for the table and money in pocket – the BEST combination!
Evenings these days I enjoy time with the kids, playing Dance Central as a family, and feeding my reading addiction to wind down. When we can eek out some spare time, we love to go camping, hiking, and canoeing/kayaking together.
Why did you choose to stay and make your home in Huntington?
I love the nature that we are surrounded by in this area: not only the variety of wildlife, but the close proximity to hiking trails, lakes, rivers, creeks, caves, and camping areas. We live in a beautiful area, and I love to get out and enjoy it.
Additionally, my husband and I also have family firmly rooted in the area – and it is nice to be able to help and stay close to them
